The island was the last stronghold of the king in the village of Ubud, and this place was considered sacred.

Since the painter Walter Spies (who was formative in what later became known as the 'Bali style') came to Ubud in the 1920s, Ubud has been a mecca for local and foreign artists, who are attracted here by the exotic landscapes and by the unusual peace and quiet of the place.
